The First Church of the Nazarene in the Gulf Coast area was organized under a tent on the 13th day of July, 1919. Rev. J. A. Collier had pitched his tent on the corner of 16th and Arlington streets where a group of Nazarenes known as the "Collier Band" were conducting a revival. At the close of this revival, sixteen charter members formed the First Church of the Nazarene of Harris County, Texas.
The first few years of the young church were spent in trying to find the right place for a permanent location. From worshiping in the home of Rev. W. D. McGraw, pastor, the little group moved to the Carpenter's Hall located at 106-1/2 Main Street. They soon purchased property and erected a tabernacle on Alamo Street, one block east of Houston Avenue. This soon became inadequate and the location of the church was moved to the corner of Abbott and Barnes Streets.
Early in 1927, property was purchased at 46 Waugh Drive and in April construction was begun on the basement. The entire building was completed in 1929. This very commodious building, seating about 800, served the needs well for some thirty years until it was no longer sound and repairable. At this time, the congregation demolished the structure and erected a new facility on the same sight.
Through the years, a large number of people have gone forth from Houston First Church of the Nazarene to establish a score of other Nazarene churches in Houston and its satellite cities. The voice of the Church of the Nazarene is thus carried to nearly every corner of the great city of Houston. Moreover, numerous people have left Houston First Church to pursue various fields of full-time Christian service.
During the 1980's, Houston First Church addressed the matter of church growth in an urban setting. As young families continued to settle in the suburbs, the congregation voted to relocate to northwest Houston. In October of 1993, God provided us with the opportunity to purchase almost 13 acres of prime property on the Sam Houston Tollway. In October of 1995, our dreams of a permanent home became a reality when we moved into our beautiful new facility. Located on the north side of the tollway between Fallbrook and West Road, we now have twelve hundred feet of exposure on what is becoming a heavily traveled thoroughfare in Houston. Hundreds of homes are being built directly behind the church's property. We are convinced that God provided this property and building for a specific purpose. We want to be found faithful. Our goal is to use this property for God's glory. We are praying that many people will be influenced for Jesus Christ in the coming years. |
